The first step on your dancer's Arts Award journey

ARTS AWARDS: DISCOVER

FAQs

  • The Discover level is the first step in the Arts Award program. It helps children explore the arts, learn about different art forms, and create their own artwork.

  • Any child can take part in the Discover level. It's great for young children or those who are new to the arts. It can be done by children of all abilities.

  • Arts Award: Discover is for children from primary level (around age 5) and up. It is the gateway to the rest of the Arts Awards program, so this is where to start if your child is over 5 years old and hasn't done any arts awards yet.

  • To complete the Discover level, children will:

    • Explore different kinds of art (like dance, painting, music, or drama).

    • Take part in an arts activity, like a ballet class.

    • Create their own piece of art.

    • Share what they have learned with others.

  • When your child finishes the Discover level, they will receive a special certificate. This shows that they have learned and explored different arts activities.

  • The Discover level can be done at your child’s own pace. It could take a few hours, a day, or spread out over a few weeks.

  • The Discover level is a great way for your child to explore the arts in a fun and creative way. It can help them build confidence, try new things, and enjoy learning through dance and other arts.

  • You can encourage your child to explore different kinds of art and ask them about what they’ve learned. You can also attend any events or activities they are part of, like ballet performances or art shows.

  • Your child can complete the Discover level at their ballet school, at an arts organization, or even at home with the help of a teacher or parent. Check with your child's school for details.

  • The cost of the Discover level is £24. This charge covers everything, including the digital booklet, moderation and admin costs, and a printed certificate for your child, delivered either via your child's teacher or via mail.

  • No special skills are needed! The Discover level is all about trying new things and having fun with the arts.

  • This depends on the age and ability of your child. For older children, completing the award by themselves should require only minimum supervision. Younger children will need some help from their grown-ups.

Remember, this is about encouraging a positive relationship with the arts, and that starts with you leading by example: showing interest and positivity towards your child's artistic expression.

And it's a great way to spend some quality time together, discovering new things about the arts!

Discover is an introductory Arts Award qualification that opens doors for young people to explore the arts world on their own terms. This accessible, entry-level award requires no prior experience and can be completed in as little as a day, making it perfect for schools, youth clubs, and community groups looking to enrich their creative offerings. Participants develop core skills by exploring different art forms, finding out about artists and their work, and sharing their discoveries with others.

The benefits of Arts Award: Discover extend beyond the certificate. Young people gain confidence in their creative abilities, develop critical thinking skills, and take their first steps toward arts leadership. For educators and facilitators, the flexible framework adapts seamlessly to existing programmes while providing structured learning outcomes. Discover creates a foundation for lifelong arts engagement and serves as a stepping stone to further Arts Award qualifications, giving children a tangible recognition of their creative achievements.
